Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia, was sentenced to a term of imprisonment on Monday. He was found guilty of organizing illegal actions during the protests in June 2019.
The court found that Saakashvili attracted people to participate in mass protests, which led to serious consequences. The former president denied all allegations, claiming the case was politically motivated.
"I am innocent, and I am not guilty. We will fight against these corrupt prosecutors, and I am sure that, in the end, the truth will prevail," Saakashvili stated after the sentencing.
Saakashvili, who is currently in Ukraine, has been declared internationally wanted. The decision of the Georgian court means that his lawyers will need to file an appeal within ten days.
